Hybrid Landscapes

"In this series, I've worked with charcoal that I make myself, using wood fragments from trees marked by industry. I grind this charcoal into a fine powder and mix it with water, letting the paper soak up the pigment through layer after layer of immersion.

The shapes that appear from these charcoal baths remind me of broken landscapes, which I sometimes piece back together. To bridge these fragments, I occasionally use thread—wool passed down from my mother and dyed with plants—to stitch the memory of the land to my own family history."
